A thickener rarely has one problem. Poor overflow clarity, unstable underflow density, excess flocculant use, changing bed level or high rake load are usually the visible result of several interacting conditions.
Ceres Instrumentation helps mining and mineral-processing sites identify what is actually limiting thickener performance—then turn unreliable or disconnected measurements into practical operating information.
We work at the point where process instrumentation, control and field execution overlap.
Every thickener and waste-stream engagement begins with a focused site safety audit integrated with the technical assessment. We examine the practical risks and constraints around access, isolation, maintenance, sampling, instrumentation, mobile plant interfaces, housekeeping and downstream waste handling—because an improvement is only useful if it can be implemented and maintained safely.
We also investigate the circuit with the relevant site people: operations, maintenance, process/metallurgy, control systems and HSE. Their combined observations often reveal the real pattern behind a recurring issue—what changed, when it occurs, where material is lost or unstable, and which previous fixes did not hold.
This creates a complete working view of the waste stream, from feed and flocculant addition through thickening, hold-up, dewatering and tailings delivery. It helps distinguish probable process causes from instrumentation faults, mechanical constraints and operating-practice issues, so the recommended actions are grounded in both data and site reality.
A thickener is part of a wider solids-management system. The real outcome is determined by what reaches the final waste stream: its density, solids content, water recovery, disposal behaviour and the consistency of feed to downstream equipment.
Ceres can assess the measurement and control chain from thickener feed through to downstream hold-up boxes, buffer tanks, centrifuges, belt filter presses (BFPs), tailings transfer and tailings-facility delivery.
By measuring the final waste stream properly, sites can verify whether upstream control is achieving the intended result. That data can be used to improve—or automate—the flocculant dose ratio upstream, rather than relying solely on a single thickener measurement or operator judgement.

Flocculant control is often limited to an assumed feed ratio, a local density reading or manual operator adjustment. Ceres can help establish a more defensible control strategy by correlating upstream feed conditions with the measured result at the downstream waste stream.
This allows the site to determine whether the existing dose is achieving the required solids separation and dewatering performance—and to feed that result back into flocculant dosing control.
The objective is a stable, measurable system:
changing feed conditions → correct flocculant dose → stable thickener performance → predictable downstream dewatering → controlled dewatered solids or tailings delivery.

Ceres provides brand-agnostic inspection, verification, diagnostics, supply, commissioning and integration across flow, level, density, pressure and analytical measurement. We assess installed instruments in their real operating environment: signal quality, location, installation, calibration, response time, maintenance condition and suitability for the duty.
That creates a reliable base for process control decisions.
Where deeper metallurgical optimisation is required, we work directly with the site metallurgical and process-control team, or bring in senior practical plant-metallurgy support suited to the circuit and commodity.
Our work is designed for sharp execution during commissioning, ramp-up, recurring performance issues or a planned optimisation campaign.
A typical engagement can include:
Circuit and measurement review
Review trends, instruments, control philosophy, operating history and the current problem statement.
Field verification
Inspect critical instruments and the physical process: installation, fouling, calibration, signal integrity, sampling points, communications and maintainability.
Trend correlation and diagnosis
Correlate bed/interface behaviour, feed conditions, underflow density, overflow quality, flocculant response and mechanical operating limits.
Prioritised action plan
Clearly separate immediate fixes, instrumentation upgrades, control changes and longer-term process work.
Implementation support
Supply, configure, commission and validate the agreed measurement and integration improvements.
More stable underflow density
Improved overflow clarity and water recovery
Earlier warning of changing feed or settling conditions
Lower flocculant waste and more controlled dosing
Fewer false process conclusions caused by bad instruments
Better confidence in operator and metallurgical decisions
A practical pathway for automation and continuous improvement
Thickener work crosses operational, maintenance, process and safety responsibilities. Ceres works alongside site teams with a practical field-first approach: clear scope, verified isolation and access requirements, maintainable installations and concise reporting.
We are not labour hire and we do not replace the site operating team. We provide focused technical capability to help the team identify the issue, make the measurements dependable and execute the right fix.
Ceres supports sites across gold, copper, iron ore, coal, water treatment and other solids-handling applications. Our capability includes instrument diagnostics, site surveys, control-system integration, commissioning and practical improvement of measurement confidence.
For sites in PNG, South-East Asia, Australia and Korea, we can mobilise focused support around a defined circuit issue or improvement programme.
